Posh is introducing automatic sales tax collection within the U.S. The applicable tax will be calculated at checkout, collected from attendees and remitted directly to the state each month. Organizers will not need to calculate, collect, or remit the sales tax Posh collects on these events.
Sales tax be based on where the event is hosted, not where your organization or attendees are based. The rollout has two phases, with different checkout displays.
Initial rollout
Automatic collection is being introduced for events in:
Georgia
Minnesota
North Carolina
Ohio
Tennessee
Texas
Washington
Wisconsin
Washington, D.C.
During this interim phase, sales tax is included in the checkout fee rather than shown as a separate sales tax line.
Planned for Early December: expanded coverage and a separate tax line
The next phase is planned to expand collection to all states where Posh is registered and show sales tax as a separate checkout line. Automatic removal of custom sales tax fees is also planned for this phase.
💡 Don’t wait for automatic fee removal: Remove your own custom sales tax fees on covered events once Posh collection launches to prevent buyers from being charged tax twice.
What this means for organizers
Less tax administration: Posh handles calculation, collection and monthly remittance for covered events.
Your earnings per ticket do NOT change: Automatic collection does not reduce your earnings. The attendee's display price increases because sales tax is added through the checkout fee.
No separate collection of Posh-collected tax: You do not need to collect or remit that tax again. It is excluded from dashboard revenue totals and organizer 1099s.
What organizers need to do
Review the event location. Check whether your event is in a covered location and whether automatic collection has launched there.
Remove custom sales tax fees. In Checkout Settings, remove fees such as “Sales Tax,” “Tax,” or “State Tax” from covered events once Posh collection starts. Keeping them can charge buyers tax twice.
Decide whether to adjust your base ticket price. NO change is required. If you want to keep the buyer’s display price flat, you may lower your base ticket price to offset the increase. Doing so reduces your earnings per ticket.
How sales tax is calculated
Location: Tax follows the event location, not the organizer’s or buyer’s address.
Taxable total: Tax applies to the whole order: ticket price + custom fees + Posh fee, after promo codes.
Payment method: Paylinks and in-person payments use the same sales tax treatment as other orders for taxed events.
For example, if your organization is based in New York but hosts an event in Texas, the event follows Texas coverage. Hosting an event in New York does not trigger Texas tax treatment just because your organization is based in Texas.
What attendees see
During the initial rollout, tax is included in the checkout fee, so buyers may see a higher fee and total display price. A separate sales tax line is planned for the next phase.
Custom Fee naming rules
The updated naming rules prevent custom fees from being confused with Posh or payment processing charges. Matching is case-insensitive, and extra spaces are collapsed before the name is checked.
Blocked as the entire name: bank, card, card processing, merchant, payment, platform, processing, service, transaction.
Blocked anywhere in the name: the word “posh” or “stripe,” or the phrase “processing fee.”
Blocked examples: service fee, processing fee, platform fee, Posh fee, bank fee, card fee, merchant fee, payment fee, transaction fee.
Allowed examples: online service fee, admin fee, sales tax, tax.
An allowed name does not mean you should use it to collect tax. Remove custom “sales tax” or “tax” fees on covered events once Posh automatically collects that tax.
FAQs
Can I opt out or absorb the tax?
No opt-out or tax-absorption option is available. Tax is added on top of the order total. You may independently reduce your base ticket price, but that lowers your earnings.
Does Posh-collected sales tax appear in my revenue or 1099?
No. It is excluded from dashboard revenue totals and organizer 1099s during both rollout phases. Tax and Posh fee amounts are tracked separately in the payment processor.
How can I request the sales tax total for my events?
Contact Support with the events and date range you need. We’ll verify that you are the account owner or an authorized user and review your request. The tax is tracked separately, but the process for providing organizer totals is still being finalized.
What if I change my event location after selling tickets?
Existing orders retain their original tax calculation. New orders use the updated event location.
How do promo codes affect sales tax?
Tax is calculated after promo codes, using the reduced order total.
